Course Outline

If you’re familiar with Windows and confident with a mouse, this is the internet training course for you. It will introduce you to all the basics you need when it comes to using the internet and email – and, it’s split into four simple lessons which take only 8-9 hours to complete.

Amongst other features, the course covers using Internet Explorer, search providers, using search, favourites and history, online transactions, webmail, email etiquette and more. This course allows you to learn how to use the internet at a pace to suit you – it’s flexible training based on a self-study platform. But there will always be a course advisor on hand to help, when you need that extra bit of support.

You will produce a workbook which is yours to keep as a handy reference guide – and you’ll get the benefit of the renowned Pitman Training name on your CV.

To further enhance your skills, we can strongly recommend moving on to one of our Word or Excel courses, which will ensure you’ve the key skills employers want.


This course has been designed to help take your knowledge from beginner level introduction to the web through to being able to confidently carry out online searches and send emails.

This course is for beginner level students and is ideal for those who want to understand the basics of using the Internet.

Prior experience using a computer and mouse would be preferrable.

There are four lessons within this course and these cover: – 

Lesson One: Understanding Internet background and terminology, knowing some of the things the Internet is used for, what you need to connect to the Internet, different types of connection, the components of the Internet Explorer screen, keying in web addresses, using links on a webpage, using Internet Explorer controls to navigate webpages.

Lesson Two: Understanding how a web address is structured, using search providers to locate information, knowing some hints and tips for using search providers, using the Internet Explorer search bar, using a website’s internal search facility, finding an item on a webpage, protecting against unreliable/ inappropriate content.

Lesson Three: Adding a website to the favorites bar and favorites list, organising Favorites, using tabbed browsing, using History, saving a webpage,  opening a saved webpage, saving a picture, printing a webpage, security issues with online transactions.

Lesson Four:  Signing in to your Google Mail student account, composing an email message, viewing sent mail, replying to a message, formatting a message, inserting and opening links, working with email attachments, creating a contact, organising your messages using labels and archiving, deleting a message, understanding instant messaging, understanding email etiquette.

This course will take around 9 hours to work through.

Our Internet Skills can be studied in any of our handy, local centres as well as partly at home. 

This means that you have the flexibility to study the Internet Skills course:

  • In centre, with our friendly course advisors available for support and guidance as and when you need it.
  • At home, for those courses which are available to study via our online distance learning platform.
